IHHT (Intermittent Hypoxic-Hyperoxic Training) in Germany

IHHT studios in Germany have proliferated faster than the underlying clinical research. The technology — alternating low-oxygen (9–12%) and high-oxygen (30–35%) breathing intervals via mask, controlled by an IHHT generator — was originally developed in the Soviet Union for cosmonaut training and adapted in the 2000s by clinics in Switzerland and Germany for cardiovascular and longevity applications.

What you'll find in Germany today: most IHHT centers run a 40-minute protocol over 5–7 cycles, monitored by SpO₂ pulse oximetry. Two equipment vendors dominate the market: Cellgym and IHHT-Pro, both German-engineered. A standard 10-session course is the typical onboarding pricing tier — usually €600–900 — with the dosing logic being adaptation, not single-session intervention.

Research is mixed. A 2014 review by Burtscher et al. supports cardiovascular adaptation effects similar to mild altitude exposure, but the longevity claims (mitochondrial biogenesis, anti-aging) are less robustly supported in peer-reviewed human studies. If you're considering IHHT, ask the operator about their specific protocol, training and what outcomes they measure — anyone selling it as a quick fix without baseline labs is overselling.
